Muybridge, a horse, and a little bet

Back in 1872, an argument was brewing between two gentlemen whether all four hooves of a galloping horse were off the ground at one time. With the speed at which a horse's feet moved when running it was impossible to know for certain with the naked eye. Enters photographer Eadweard Muybridge, who accepts the challenge. With the help of advancements in still photography, Muybridge set up twelve cameras in a line with strings that were tripped by the passing horse. The bet was settled that all four hooves were, indeed, off of the ground at one time. The little bet totalled $25,000.

Thus was born the first early video!

The story is really about the advancements of photography, however video is really a succession of still images played at a certain frames per second (fps) to give the perception of movement.
